What UE4SS is
UE4SS (Unreal Engine 4/5 Scripting System) is a free, open-source mod loader for Unreal Engine games, made by the UE4SS-RE team and released under the MIT licence. Scirocco Thugs runs on Unreal Engine 4.27.2, which UE4SS supports.
Here's how it starts. The release contains a small loader called dwmapi.dll. Placed next to the game's executable, it gets loaded when the game starts, it starts UE4SS.dll, and UE4SS then starts every mod in its Mods folder. No game file is replaced or edited. Remove the files and the game is exactly as Steam installed it.
Why version 3.0.1 exactly
Before you start
- Scirocco Thugs installed through Steam. This guide covers the full game: the build with
ThugLyfe-Win64-Shipping.exeon Unreal Engine 4.27.2. The free demo is a separate app and isn't covered. - Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. The game itself needs 64-bit Windows 10 at minimum.
- DirectX 11, which is the game's default. Don't add
-dx12or-vulkanto the game's launch options: the two in-game mod menus need DirectX 11. (The gameplay and AI changes don't.) - Microsoft Visual C++ 2015-2022 Redistributable (x64). Most gaming PCs already have it. If a mod doesn't start, installing it is the first thing to try: vc_redist.x64.exe from Microsoft (opens in a new tab).
- The game closed while you copy files.
Find the game's Win64 folder
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click Scirocco Thugs, choose Manage, then Browse local files.
- File Explorer opens the game's main folder,
SciroccoThugs. OpenThugLyfe, thenBinaries, thenWin64. - Make sure you're in the right place:
Win64containsThugLyfe-Win64-Shipping.exe(74,309 KB on the build this guide was written for). That's the real game executable, and UE4SS has to sit right next to it.
Usual path on a default Steam install
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SciroccoThugs\ThugLyfe\Binaries\Win64Same folder in a Steam library on another drive (the screenshots on this site)
F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\SciroccoThugs\ThugLyfe\Binaries\Win64Download UE4SS 3.0.1
- Open the official release page: UE4SS v3.0.1 on GitHub (opens in a new tab). It was published on February 14, 2024.
- Scroll down to Assets and click
UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip(5.27 MB).
| File | Get it? | What it is |
|---|---|---|
UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip | Yes | The standard version for players. This is the one. |
zDEV-UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip | Not needed | The developer edition. Same UE4SS.dll and dwmapi.dll (checked byte for byte), plus developer files and console windows switched on. |
zCustomGameConfigs.zip | No | Settings for other specific games. |
zMapGenBP.zip | No | A developer tool. |
| Source code (zip, tar.gz) | No | UE4SS's source. Not something you can install. |
Check the download is genuine (optional)
This proves the file you got is byte for byte the official release. It takes half a minute.
- Open your Downloads folder in File Explorer.
- Click the address bar, type
powershelland press Enter. A PowerShell window opens in that folder. - Paste this line and press Enter:
PowerShell
Get-FileHash .\UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip -Algorithm SHA256The Hash it prints must be exactly:
SHA-256 of UE4SS_v3.0.1.zip (5,523,402 bytes)
4B47D4BCEDDD2F561A4E395BFA00924CCFC945AF576A2D0C613E6537846C57ECIf it doesn't match, delete the file and download it again from the official page. After step 4 you can run the same command inside Win64 on the two DLLs:
SHA-256 of UE4SS.dll (16,263,680 bytes)
8AC18FBFFC1EF96B0662D4A2D537B3F224C26D65CAABA7989A9404C566102B26SHA-256 of dwmapi.dll (58,368 bytes)

The zip has no folder inside it. Its files belong directly in Win64.
- Double-click
UE4SS_v3.0.1.zipin your Downloads folder. Windows opens it like a folder and shows six items:Mods,Changelog.md,dwmapi.dll,README.md,UE4SS-settings.iniandUE4SS.dll. - Press Ctrl + A to select all six, then Ctrl + C to copy them.
- Go to the
Win64folder from step 1 and press Ctrl + V. - If Windows asks for administrator permission (normal when the game is under
C:\Program Files (x86)), click Continue.
Prefer 7-Zip or WinRAR? Extract the zip into Win64 with either one. Just make sure the files land in Win64 itself.
Check the folder
Your Win64 folder should now look like this. Sizes are as File Explorer shows them.

Win64\ ├── Mods\ UE4SS mods folder (built-in mods + mods.txt) ├── Changelog.md UE4SS, 27 KB ├── dwmapi.dll UE4SS loader, 57 KB ├── README.md UE4SS, 8 KB ├── ThugLyfe-Win64-Shipping.exe the game, already here ├── UE4SS-settings.ini UE4SS settings, 5 KB ├── UE4SS.dll UE4SS itself, 15,883 KB └── UE4SS.log appears after the first launch
A fresh Mods folder holds UE4SS's built-in mods: ActorDumperMod, BPML_GenericFunctions, BPModLoaderMod, CheatManagerEnablerMod, ConsoleCommandsMod, ConsoleEnablerMod, jsbLuaProfilerMod, Keybinds, LineTraceMod, SplitScreenMod, the shared folder and mods.txt. Leave them as they are. The Ungodly mods don't need any of them changed.
First launch
- Start the game from Steam as usual.
- Wait for the main menu, then quit.
- Open
Win64\UE4SS.logwith Notepad and look for these lines:
| Look for | What it tells you |
|---|---|
A line starting with UE4SS - v3.0.1 near the top | The right UE4SS version loaded. |
Found EngineVersion: naming 4.27 | UE4SS recognised the game's engine. |
Starting mods (from mods.txt load order)... | UE4SS is reading its Mods folder. |
UE4SS is ready. Next, install the mod pack.
UE4SS settings you might touch
Players don't need to change anything in Win64\UE4SS-settings.ini. These are the only lines worth knowing about, all quoted from the official 3.0.1 file and release notes.
| Setting | Default | When to change it |
|---|---|---|
[Debug] ConsoleEnabled | 0 | 1 opens a separate text console with UE4SS's live log. |
[Debug] GuiConsoleVisible | 0 | 1 shows UE4SS's debug window (live log and object viewer) when the game starts. |
[Debug] GraphicsAPI | opengl | What that debug window draws with. If it opens blank or white, set dx11, the UE4SS team's own fix. |
[General] bUseUObjectArrayCache | true | Set false if the game crashes on start-up with UE4SS installed, again the UE4SS team's own fix. |
If you turned a debug window on and something looks off, set it back to 0. If you do customise this file, keep a copy: the UE4SS team's update instructions say to replace every file except your UE4SS-settings.ini.
Coming from another UE4SS version
- I used UE4SS 2.x on this PC before
- Delete
xinput1_3.dllfromWin64. The UE4SS team warns that it crashes the game if it's still there. Then install 3.0.1 as above. - I installed zDEV-UE4SS_v3.0.1 instead
- That works as is. Its
UE4SS.dllanddwmapi.dllare byte-identical to the standard ones; it only adds developer files and shows console windows. SetConsoleEnabled = 0andGuiConsoleVisible = 0to hide them. - I have an experimental build or another version
- Remove every file it added to
Win64, then install 3.0.1 from step 2. - Should I update UE4SS later?
- Only when a new version of this pack says so. The mods are built for 3.0.1.
Removing UE4SS
Close the game and delete these from Win64: dwmapi.dll, UE4SS.dll, UE4SS-settings.ini, UE4SS.log, Changelog.md, README.md and the Mods folder. The Mods folder only holds UE4SS mods, so this removes the Ungodly mods too. Keep ThugLyfe-Win64-Shipping.exe: that's the game.
Steam's Verify integrity of game files only checks the game's own files, so it won't remove UE4SS for you.
